College football is so back. We have a ton of movement from my preseason rankings. As it should be, I did not take my preseason expectations to be fact. I have no problem making massive adjustments when I learn new information about teams.
Florida State, Washington, Colorado, and Duke were amongst the biggest risers while LSU, Clemson, TCU, and South Carolina all tumbled.
There is going to be a lot more shuffling before we finally start to see some sort of hierarchy in this wide open 2023 season.
The Floor Slap Week 2 Top 25
- Georgia (1-0)
- Michigan (1-0)
- I don’t want to overreact from one week of football too much. There were other teams that were more impressive in week 1, but I didn’t see anything out of Georgia or Michigan that makes me want to bump them down just yet.
- Alabama (1-0)
- They’ll probably take my #1 spot with a good performance against Texas. Jalen Milroe looks promising.
- Florida State (1-0)
- The Seminoles looked spectacular in the 2nd half against LSU. The Jordan Travis to Keon Coleman connection might be the best in college football. But just because we had high expectations for LSU, doesn’t mean they’re a great football team. Need to see how FSU follows up this performance.
- Washington (1-0)
- After Boise State got off to a quick start early in the game, Washington was smothering. They won 56-19 and Pennix had 450 yards and 5 TDs. Their trip to East Lansing in week 3 should be interesting.
- Penn State (1-0)
- Ohio State (1-0)
- Drew Allar looks definitively better than Kyle McCord which boosts the Nittany Lions above the Buckeyes. But Ohio State’s defense looks elite, and their offense should figure it out. Check out our Big Ten Power Rankings for a further breakdown of where these teams stand.
- Notre Dame (2-0)
- They’ve dominated on both sides of the ball in two consecutive weeks. Ohio State travels to Notre Dame in week 4. Buckle up for a defensive showdown that will have massive CFP ramifications.
- USC (2-0)
- Utah (1-0)
- Even shorthanded, they dominated the Gators.
- Oregon (1-0)
- This Pac-12 race is going to be so fun.
- Tennessee (1-0)
- Texas (1-0)
- Oregon State (1-0)
- Oklahoma (1-0)
- North Carolina (1-0)
- Wisconsin (1-0)
- Colorado (1-0)
- Maybe this is an overreaction. I wouldn’t be shocked if they lose to Nebraska this weekend. That will be a much better test for their offense. But everyone else is jumping on the Buffalo bandwagon, so why not follow suit?
- Kansas State (1-0)
- This is what I mean when I say college football is so damn deep this year. I don’t see a clear cutoff of teams that could improve and make an improbable run toward the playoff. Frankly, the gap between #1 and #19 is razor thin by my estimation.
- LSU (0-1)
- Brian Kelly said it himself: “we’re not the team I thought we were.” Just because they started the season as a top-10 team, doesn’t mean we have to treat them as such. 20 feels appropriate based off how they played.
- Ole Miss (1-0)
- It’s kinda like throwing darts blind folded when picking what teams to rank this early in the season. It was Mercer, but Jaxson Dart looked really good and they outgained Mercer by over 400 yards.
- Iowa (1-0)
- Maryland (1-0)
- Tulane (1-0)
- Duke (1-0)
- I mean they beat Clemson. However ugly the game was, they deserve to be ranked.
